Travel concessions

Get free public transport around NSW and the ACT.

You can apply for a NSW City Rail Ex-Member of Defence Forces Pass if you:

  • have a DVA disability
  • have a TPI pension
  • hold a gold or white Repatriation Health Card
  • and, are a resident of NSW or the ACT. 

This pass means you can travel free on public transport ‒ rail, bus and ferry ‒ within NSW and rail in the ACT.

You also get 3 free Country Link return rail trips anywhere within NSW and the ACT per year.

Note: You can travel free of charge in the area bounded by Wollongong, Goulburn, Bathurst and Newcastle on any NSW Government-owned public transport.

Home ownership scheme

Did you serve:

  • after 1 July 2008
  • or, between 1985 and 1 July 2008?

You may be able to apply for the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme (DHOAS).

The Department of Veterans' Affairs manages this and 2 other home schemes. These are:

  1. Defence Service Homes Scheme: subsidised housing loans and home support loans as well as building and home contents insurance.
  2. Defence Home Owners Scheme for former Australian Defence Force members who joined on or after 15 May 1985.

On-base advice & support

Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) advisors work at 35 bases across Australia to help you and your family better connect with DVA services.

DVA advisors help you with health services, rehabilitation and compensation - support you might be entitled to access.

Depending on need, advisors are available either full or part-time.

The advisors work out of Defence Health Centres, or within the health precinct. This means, you can access the service wherever you are.

You may be able to access Centrelink benefits, such as benefits relating to:

  • caring
  • illness
  • disability
  • retirement
  • study
  • training
  • and many more.

Injury or illness

Are you injured or ill as a result of your Reserve service?

  • Are you unable to return to your civilian job because of your illness / injury?
  • Or, has the Department of Veterans' Affairs accepted liability for you injury / illness?
  • Or, has the Department of Veterans' Affairs declined your claim after the appeals process is complete?

You may be entitled to remain on duty until you overcome your illness / injury and can return to work.

You may also be entitled to Defence Health Services (DHS) medical care or you may be refunded civilian health care costs.
