Employers Recognised by Defence Reservists

Four employers from Victoria have been recognised for their continuous support for the Australian Defence Force Reserve.

Mustang Country Down Under, JDS Australia, NEC and City of Ballarat have each received a Defence Reserves Support Council Employer Support Awards.

They were among 14 organisations nominated by their Reservist employees to acknowledge the contribution and support the employers give that allows Reservists to fulfill their Defence duties.

Mustang Country Down Under, whose business focuses on mechanics and motor engineering, was the award winner in the small business category.

Army Reserve Craftsman Liam Mercieca, a Service Manager nominated Mustang Country Down Under as the company has gone to great lengths to support him in his Reserve service by providing flexible working arrangements including backfilling his role with casual staff to minimise the impact on clients.

JDS Australia was the award winner of the medium business category. Lieutenant (Army) Samuel Abdelsayed nominated his employer, JDS Australia, because they have been so supportive and enabled him to attend all training activities and courses.

NEC was the winner for the large business category. They were nominated by Lance Corporal Daniel Lydford for their unwaivering support, commitment and accommodating manner for his training and operational requirements, sometimes at short notice. NEC has recently altered their Reserve Leave Policy which enables Reservists to use paid leave to attend training activities.

The City of Ballarat was awarded the winner of the public sector category. Lieutenant Robert Powell nominated his employer for their continuous support to his Army Reserve commitments throughout the year. He stated that The City of Ballarat has been so supportive of Reservists that it has encouraged other employees to join Reserves. The winners of the DRSC-VIC Employer Support Awards will now be considered for the 2017 National Employer Support Awards.
